The last full month of summer used to force a small trade-off in the Highlands. You could catch a play at the Northern Lights Pavilion or you could eat well, and if you wanted both in the same evening you drove. That geometry has shifted. In 2026, August reads differently because the food scene has finally lined up with the arts calendar, and the two now sit inside a fifteen-minute radius of Head Lake.
The Thesis, In One Paragraph
If you live here, you already know the fixtures: the Wilberforce Fair, Minden Pride, the studio tour, the Saturday markets. What's new is the density of good rooms to eat in between those things. Juna opened on Highland Street after Rhubarb's owners bought the old Cindy's clothing store. Features Brasserie took over the Fort Irwin building that Till Death BBQ left vacant. Toast Minden slid into the breakfast slot with enough conviction that Ontario Culinary called it out by name earlier this year. The upshot for a resident: August is now the first month you can plan a full Friday-to-Sunday without leaving the county and without repeating a restaurant.
A Week You Can Actually Book
The centerpiece for the first half of the month is Morning Rain at the Highlands Summer Festival, running August 6–10 at the Northern Lights Performing Arts Pavilion on County Road 21. The festival runs six weeks of plays and concerts each summer, and the August window is when the local performer roster is deepest.
Bracket the play with two dinners you couldn't have booked two summers ago and a Saturday morning at the market, and you have a weekend that would read as a city itinerary if it weren't sitting under a canopy of white pine.
A useful benchmark: the Haliburton Art & Craft Festival at Head Lake Park has been running for more than sixty years. Juna has been open for less than two. That gap is the story of this August.
The New Tables
Four rooms are worth reorganizing a weekend around. They are different enough that you can hit all four in three days without palate fatigue.
Juna, 210 Highland Street
The upscale Italian project from Terri Mathews-Carl and Christoph Carl, who also run Rhubarb in Carnarvon. The space seats 32 inside, with a "secret garden" patio for another 30. Executive Chef Amber Husband, previously at the Post House, is running the kitchen. Artisan pizza, pasta, salads, cocktails. It is the closest thing the village has to a room-you-dress-for.
Features Brasserie, 5014 Haliburton Lake Road
Neal Rowell, thirty-seven years in the industry and formerly of Sir Sam's Inn, opened this with Alex McCracken in the building that used to house Till Death BBQ. The tagline is "comfort food refined." The pickle soup has been through international culinary competitions and is the one dish worth driving Haliburton Lake Road for. Rowell trained as a sommelier in 1997, so the wine list rewards attention.
Toast Minden
The newest of the four, and the one that solves the Sunday morning problem in Minden. Ontario Culinary flagged it earlier this year as already earning local-favourite status for breakfast and lunch. Useful before the drive back to the city, or before a morning at the Minden Hills Cultural Centre, which is hosting rotating exhibits through August 29.
Boshkung Smokehouse, 1095 Redkenn Road
Texas-style barbecue inside Haliburton Forest & Wildlife Reserve. Open seasonally from Victoria Day weekend. The weekly rhythm is worth memorizing: Tacos & Tequila every Sunday, Friday Fish & Chips, and a Tuesday–Friday happy hour from 3 to 4. Closed Mondays. It is the most reliable post-hike dinner in the county.
What's On Stage, In The Ring, And In The Studios
The August cultural slate does most of its own advertising through Canoe FM and the Arts Council, so residents rarely need a summary. What's easier to miss is how the dates interlock:
- Morning Rain, Highlands Summer Festival, August 6–10, Northern Lights Pavilion. Evening shows at 7:30, matinees at 2.
- Wilberforce Fair, mid-August, the small-town agricultural fair with horse pulls, live music, and a petting zoo. The horse pulls are the reason to arrive early.
- Minden Pride, a week-long August celebration built around dignity, respect, and inclusivity, with programming rolling across Minden venues.
- Highlands East Studio Tour, late August, a driving route through working studios in the eastern half of the county. Treat it as a Sunday plan, not a two-hour errand.
- Minden Hills Cultural Centre, exhibits running June 2 through August 29.
The interlock: three of these five sit east of Highway 35, which means a resident based near Kashagawigamog or Drag Lake can chain two events plus a meal at Features Brasserie without doubling back.
The Saturday Shape Of The Week
Every Saturday in August, from the 1st through the 29th, the farmers' market runs 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Local produce, meats, cheeses, baked goods, preserves. This is not new. What's changed is what to do with the four hours between the market closing and dinner.
The answer most residents have not tried yet: drive Highway 118 up to Abbey Gardens at 1012 Garden Gate Drive. Locally sourced goods, educational programming, and a Food Hub. Boshkung Brewing runs a weekly farmers' market on-site during summer where a growler pairs with a wood-fired pizza. It is the closest the Highlands comes to a Saturday-afternoon anchor that isn't a lake.
For an alternative that ends at water instead of beer: the Haliburton Sculpture Forest has been growing since fall 2001 and now holds more than thirty installations by local and international artists along walking trails. It is free, quiet, and empties out by 4:00 p.m.
When The Toronto Guests Arrive
August is the month out-of-town family shows up, and every resident eventually gets asked for a plan. Two anchors are worth memorizing so you're not improvising:
The first is A Walk in the Clouds at Haliburton Forest & Wildlife Reserve, the canopy boardwalk that runs above the treetops. It is the single most photographable ninety minutes in the county, and it converts skeptics who "aren't outdoorsy" into people who will come back in the fall.
The second is the Dorset Scenic Lookout Tower, a hundred feet up over the Lake of Bays narrows. Best done on a clear morning before 10 a.m. to beat the tour buses. Pair either one with a late lunch at Boshkung Smokehouse if you're already inside Haliburton Forest, or Features Brasserie if you're coming back from Dorset via Haliburton Lake Road.
The Small Adjustment This August
The old pattern was to keep the meals casual because the food scene didn't reward doing otherwise, and to save the "occasion" energy for the show. That's an outdated split. Book Juna the same way you'd book a table in Prince Edward County. Drive to Features Brasserie for a Wednesday dinner and let the pickle soup do its work. Save Boshkung Smokehouse for Sunday when Tacos & Tequila is on. Treat Toast Minden as the reset before the drive south.
A resident who does that this August will end the month with a version of the Highlands that reads less like a cottage rotation and more like a small, well-fed county with a theatre in the middle of it.
